It was twinned with a CART event, replacing the USAC Stock Car event that ran here in the past with USAC Champ Car. Because of the twinning Indy 500 winner Gordon Johncock pulled double duty and while he went out early here with mechanical woes he'd finish fifth in the CART race. This may have been an ARCA race but the battle for the win was a USAC vs. NASCAR showdown as Cup racer Bobby Allison, driving one of his old AMC Matadors, took on USAC Stock Car points leader Joe Ruttman. Ruttman would prevail to win both this race, the first of his three ARCA wins, and later the USAC Stock Car title. 4. RaceFanX posted: 03.20.2020 - 12:08 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @2 Indeed. This would actually turn out to be Rusty's only ARCA start, looks like he ran good but a blown engine doomed his chance for a good finish. He was mainly an ASA racer at the time. 5. Apparently it wasn't much more popular among the drivers - Gordon Johncock was pulling double duty after finishing 5th in the CART race but didn't have his heart in the second race. After going a lap down just 15 laps in, Johncock pulled into the garage, saying he was bored and just getting in the way of the leaders. Have to say that this might be the first time I've ever heard of a driver deciding to up and quit mid-race because they were bored, though maybe Johncock had a point if he was the last provisional starter in the field and was lapped that quickly. If there was going to be any intrigue, the race should have been one lap longer. Winner Joe Ruttman had a tire go flat on the cooldown lap. 8. rm posted: 07.16.2021 - 10:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Some missing owners, makes and DNQs here: 12 owner - Bobby Allison 17 owner - Curtis Payne 18 owner - Cliff Weidel (same all 1980) 26 owner - Don "D.L." Ford (self-owned) (Can't tell for certain, looks like a #11 but it's not very clear, sorry) Rain struck during qualifying so many of those teams didn't get a chance to post a time. Not that anyone could have touched polesitter-turned-race-winner Joe Ruttman, the only drive to crack 160 mph. Apparently there was a minor dispute regarding Scott Stovall's status as a starter as he spun on his qualifying lap due to a wet track. Evidently the ruling went in his favor and the eventual rookie of the year gained 15 spots on his way to an 11th-place finish. Info for DNQ driver Dean Woodbury - home - Anoka, MN 9.
