Harvey only ran two ARCA races in 1980 and won both of them. This was also Potter's first ARCA race of the season. Both Harvey and Potter were part-time NASCAR Winston Cup racers at the time. Cup Series journeyman Ferrel Harris got a one-off in some better equipment for this race as Bobby Allison put him behind the wheel of one of his old Cup surplus AMC Matadors for this one. The only non-Big 3 entry on the track saw Harris led 11 laps before he had issues and crashed out, likely with Floridian fan favorite short tracker David Rogers. This was the first of only two ARCA starts for Rogers. 4. rm posted: 02.09.2021 - 8:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Here's something interesting on this race... #44 sponsor - Technicraft #44 owner - Billy Hagan #44 crew chief - Darrell Bryant DC: Terry Labonte qualified Hagan's #44 Hagan wasn't able to make qualifying, so he entrusted his car to his Cup driver, Terry Labonte, still a month away from breaking into the win column for the first of 22 times. Labonte promptly put it on the pole. With the driver change pending, series officials decided they couldn't let Hagan start from a pole position that he didn't earn and moved him back to the halfway mark of the grid in 15th and promoted Billie Harvey to P1 instead. In a twist of irony, Harvey found himself in that position at Michigan the next month when Harry Gant qualified his car on the pole only for series officials to tell Harvey he'd have to start shotgun on the field instead. (Which was of no consequence to Harvey, who won that race as well!) It was all for naught for Hagan as he wrecked by himself on the first lap of the race. #1 sponsor - Riverside Auto Parts #12 sponsor - AMC #17 sponsor - RPM Racing #87 sponsor - Fast Lane LTD Fifth caution - 5, 12, 22, 87 accident turn 4 Larry Smith blew an engine not far in front of the lead pack and dropped oil everywhere, spinning himself out in the process. Racing back to the line, Billie Harvey tried to make bold move for the lead on the outside of Ferrel Harris, chopping Harris - proudly running the lone Matador in the field - off in the process. With a slick track, it didn't take much contact from Harvey to send Harris spinning, where he was collected by third place David Rogers. From there, Harvey's only competition was Marvin Smith, and he cemented his victory when Smith had to pit with a flat tire and lost multiple laps trying to get his car refired on pit road. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
