There are rumors the #01 he drove here was the exact same Olds that Donnie Allison almost won the 1979 Daytona 500 driving. 3. They ran with minimum fuel to make the car lighter/faster in qualifying. When the race started, he quickly ran out of fuel and since he was ahead of most of the field, disaster ensued. 4. Schrader brought the sharp-looking yellow and red racer home with a top-10. Phil Parsons only made a handful of starts in ARCA action but came home with a top-5 here. A 15-year-old Bobby Labonte was a member of his pit crew for this race. After the father-son pair of Bob and Bobby Dotter were both taken out in the big crash at the start Bob got out of his car and ran over to help Bobby. Thankfully both Dotters and everyone else in the 11-car pileup escaped serious injury. 5. Once the Clash was over this race was resumed and run to completion. 6. The car was a castoff from his father Bobby Allison's NASCAR Cup effort with AMC a few years earlier and Davey gave it everything it had as he zoomed up through the field to finish a strong sixth. 9. This DNQ was Finney's last entry in a major stock car race and his only one after his vicious airborne crash here at Daytona in the Firecracker 400 the previous July where he broke his neck. Nice to see he was able to comeback after that if only briefly. 11. rm posted: 06.06.2020 - 11:49 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) 06 sponsor - Test Tube 9 sponsor - Booher Farms Bob Schacht took a pretty nasty lick in this one, but was ready for the second race of the season at Dayton a couple months later - down one car, though. 12. rm posted: 08.05.2020 - 12:44 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 18 sponsor - Fleetwood Industries 82 sponsor - McMillan Farm Supply 13. However, Tim Fontana started up the car and ran one pace lap before diving back down pit road and swapping the seat with Davey. At the time, that's all was needed to receive the points and credit for running the race. Dave Dayton used this same unusual ruling to help win the ARCA championship in 1975. After injuring his foot in a crash at Tri-County, he swapped with John Anderson before the green flag in a race at Toledo. Anderson went on to win the race. 15. ARCA certainly attracted some unusual models over the years and this race in particular seemed crammed to gills with them, such as Schrader's bizarre Ford Granada that was mentioned earlier. IIRC ARCA allowed both the old long wheelbase and new short wheelbase NASCAR Cup-style cars here and it led to a lot of experimentation at the ARCA level as some teams gave the new cars a shot while others ran Cup Series castoffs (see Richmond's big Olds he won with or that Fontana/Allison Matador). 19. possum posted: 01.07.2021 - 9:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @18 - at the time NASCAR required cars (i.e. bodies) to be not more than 3 model years old (so '81, '80, and '79 bodies would be legal). ARCA I think allowed 7 year old bodies, so you could definately see some dated equipment. For the most part ARCA was a sportsman series then, and a lot of guys weren't putting more than $20,000 or so per year in - meaning they had to keep a car running as long as they could. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
