Jeff posted: 03.19.2020 - 7:12 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) ARCA founder John Marcum passed away from a heart attack the day before this race at Dayton Speedway. This put the future of the series up in the air for awhile. I believe one issue of Stock Car Racing Magazine covered the state of different sanctioning bodies and predicted that ARCA would probably go under first, before ASA, USAC and others like the IRA. The founder of ARCA had a close connection with NASCAR founder Bill France from the early years of stock car racing. NASCAR stepped in with the Talladega Superspeedway sponsoring the series with a $25,000 point fund for the 1982 season, and helped the series survive. ARCA managed to outlast all those other stock car series mentioned in that SCR magazine article long ago. 2.
