RaceFanX posted: 06.26.2020 - 11:18 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The one-mile clay oval at the Illinois State Fairgrounds was a staple of the USAC Stock Car Series from 1961 onward but as that series faded out in the early 1980s the track started transitioning over to ARCA as its replacement starting with this event that was a combination race featuring competitors from both series. ARCA's first visit to its now longtime home in Springfield was a nice interseries matchup as USAC's Dean Roper beat ARCA's polesitter Bobby Jacks to claim the win. There was a nice split between the two series in the top-5 as USAC's Rick O'Brien and Terry Pearson took third and fourth while ARCA's Jerry Churchill was fifth. 3. With a meager total purse of $16,000 between the two sanctioning bodies, I'm not sure the winnings for finishing in the 20s would have even covered your parking for the fair that day.
