Just moments after Johnson's crash, a paramedic was attending to what appeared to be Kevin Gundaker in car #58 according to the video and was struck by Bob Keselowski. Miraculously, the paramedic survived. Here's a link to a video with both accidents: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmKcbZDA3l0 2. Staley was sent flying and landed hard then had the spinning #29 roll on top of his legs where its exhaust pipes started burning his body. Gundaker and Keselowski were alright but Staley was badly injured and airlifted from the track to Halifax Medical Center. He suffered two broken legs, two badly injured kneecaps, second and third degree burns, and severe injuries to his left arm (doctors considered amputation but thankfully were able to save it). The story of the last accident, specifically the rescue efforts of Staley's fellow paramedics and later hospital staff to save his life, were later partly recreated for an episode of the TV show "Rescue 911" the following November. The episode downplayed Slick Johnson's death in the crash (he was only referred to as "the driver in car #95") but did mention it (it was rare for episodes of Rescue 911 to show incidents where people died). Sadly Staley's injuries were too severe for him to ever return to work as a paramedic, he did win a serious amount of money from ARCA in a lawsuit after the accident. 3. Ramo Stott's final ARCA start, and first since 1988, sees him violently roll when a single car spin saw his #78 turn over four times and trigger a multi-car crash. His Oldsmobile had a retro paint scheme for this race recalling his famous #7 Plymouth Superbird from the early 1970s. (I'm pretty sure this race was televised but oddly the only footage I've ever seen of Stott's roll was amateur footage from the grandstand). Patty Moise's last ARCA start sees her start from the pole and finish in the top-10. It was her fourth pole in five ARCA starts and her second in a row at Daytona. 4. It's AMAZING that there haven't been more ARCA fatalities over the year. 6. Petty was forced to withdraw from the event due to the damage to his car; Hess originally thought he would have to do the same, however he was able to repair his car and make the race. Hess had been scheduled to start 5th; Johnson, 12th. 11. 23andJoe posted: 05.11.2014 - 5:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) To the rear: Ben Hess (#40) backup car, Slick Johnson (#95) backup car, Charlie Glotzbach (#0) driver change. #16 owner: Toni Weltmeyer #22 owner: Billy Thomas (same for all races this season) #31 owner: Carol Levin (same for all races this season) #33 owner: Christi McDowell (same for all races this season) #45 owner: Mike Laughlin #51 owner: Elmer Simko #56 owner: Lewis Cooper #58 owner: Gordon Gundaker (same for all races this season) #67 owner: Jerry Massey (same for all races this season) #74 owner: Marvin Ragan (same for all races this season) #95 owner: Earl Sadler #97 owner: Marvin Ragan #98 owner: Thee Dixon #99 owner: Ron Moran (same for all races this season) Winnings: Horton, $10,700 M.Gibson, $7,150 C.Young, $6,600 Glotzbach, $4,350 K.Ragan, $3,650 Moise, $3,285 Farmer, $2,750 J.Churchill, $4,500 Brevak, $4,050 Strait, $4,975 Riggins, $2,215 G.Taylor, $2,800 B.Bowsher, $3,450 Gerhart, $2,300 Moran, $1,900 Dotter, $3,250 S.Johnson, $1,800 Eunice, $1,760 D.Simko, $3,025 B.Thomas, $2,600 Keselowski, $3,235 Massey, $1,525 Brewer, $1,500 D.McDowell, $1,475 Gundaker, $1,450 Gehrke, $1,800 T.Leslie, $2,805 Raymond, $1,700 Weinbroer, $1,700 Niemiroski, $1,300 Stott, $1,250 Miskotten III, $1,550 D.Jenkins, $1,100 Hess, $2,250 LaDuke, $950 Weltmeyer, $1,900 Waid, $700 M.Potter, $675 K.Compton, $625 Cooper, $600 #00 make: Chevroklet (owner H.L. Like Davey Allison and Justin Wilson, his death helped save the lives of many other people. 19. nascarman posted: 01.17.2016 - 9:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also of note: Ben Hess initially qualified 5th, Slick Johnson qualified 12th, Ritchie Petty qualified 23rd. A six car crash at the end of final practice destroyed all three of their cars sending Hess and Johnson to the rear of the field. Petty did not have a backup and was forced to withdraw, Glenn Brewer was the first DNQ and therefore moved into the starting lineup. Hess was originally driving an Oldsmobile. Ferrel Harris qualified 9th but was replaced in the 0 car with Charlie Glotzbach for the race. 20. nascarman posted: 12.01.2016 - 8:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Driver Change: 0 / Ferrel Harris / T.T Colley / Pontiac 21. 26 Years Behind posted: 04.03.2017 - 12:05 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) How did it happen that the paramedics were working on drivers while the track was still hot? Jeff posted: 06.13.2020 - 10:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) A little information on the cautions in this race: "The first caution came on lap seven when Ronald Cooper spun out of Turn 4 and wound up on the infield grass in front of pit road. On lap 15, 10 cars were involved in another mishap in Turn 4 that put the race under caution for five laps. Carl Miskotten wiped out in Turn 2 on lap 31, slowing another three laps. Ramo Stott joined the act on lap 39 when his Oldsmobile got loose in Turn 2, turned sideways down the backstreteh and rolled over twice on its roof. After another minor caution, leaders Charlie Glotzbach, Red Farmer and Tracy Leslie spun onto the grass while running wide-open down the backstreteh. Farmer, amazingly, came right out of the chicane and back onto the track under full power. "A lapped car spun and came across the track in front of us," said Farmer, who was running second. "I spun toward the infield, did a couple of 360s, and wound up in the chicane. I got in third gear and came back on the track." Said Goltzbach, who was leading at the time: "I felt positive we could have won. The car was just working so good." The final caution appeared to occur on lap 78, and I think there's only one of the 7 not listed in this newspaper report I clipped the above excerpt from. 25.
