I think Roy Payne's car number should be #16, the number he usually had. 2. Ryan posted: 05.11.2013 - 11:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) DELMA COWART TOP 10 3. Found an interesting local paper article leading up to this race focusing on Dave Mader III, discussing why Mader hadn't hit it big as a Winston Cup star yet like he thought he'd be at this point in his career. Mader said he thought there were several drivers he'd competed against over the years that unfairly got their way to top rides, one that he named being Davey Allison. While Davey of course was going to be fast-tracked to Cup - he was running his rookie campaign just a year removed from running full-time in ARCA - it's hard to say that Davey was undeserving or that he didn't immediately prove he belonged in Cup; I can't say that there would have been too many folks out there that agreed with Mader's assessment on the situation at the time. It seems even more ironic in hindsight as Mader became one of the heir apparents to Bill Elliott at Melling the next year, despite a spotty track record of his own, as well as the fact that Mader is widely considered to be one of the drivers with the weakest credentials at the Cup level to ever start the All-Star Race based off of his 1992 Winston appearance. The same article also refers to James Hylton as an "old-timer" when mentioning his Talladega win. That old-timer still wound up racing for 2 more decades! This was a fuel mileage race, with Glotzbach and Venturini running on fumes near the end. Glotzbach barely had enough to make it to the flag running full song, while Venturini ran low on power through the trioval and lost second place to Mader coming to the checkers. Glotzbach last pitted on lap 68, meaning his final tank of gas lasted him an even 50 laps. 15.
