That's what makes it a great series, though. 2. 83andJoe posted: 02.26.2013 - 10:52 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) #66 owner: Mike Brandt #3 owner: Kenny Allen #0 owner: Mike Brandt 3. This Grand Prix weekend centered around the SCCA Trans-Am series which were rather close to stock cars by this time. The urban Iowa track was a scenic one downtown and included two bridge crossings of the Des Moines River. Trans-Am ran the Des Moines circuit from 1989 through 1994, explaining why ARCA was only able to run here once. The 1994 event was probably hindered by the fact that the infamous Midwest floods of 1993 washed out the main Trans-Am race the prior year, hurting interest for following races. 5. He then flew up to Iowa and finished 3rd here. Also catching the connecting flight from Daytona to Des Moines was Michael Waltrip, making his final ARCA start and his first since 1987 (his last confirmed start was a win at Atlanta that year). He finished in the top-15 in both races despite breaking late here and failing to finish. 7. The defunct NASCAR Australia series also ran the Surfer's Paradise course (and Bathurst which is a Monteal-style road course made up of public roads). The NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour did a street course race in Los Angeles back in 1998, the promoters were hoping to translate that into a Cup race later but it wasn't successful. 8. It was his last major points race in any series, he attempted Cup races through 1997 but never qualifed for any. 9. I would guess that Junior Johnson would be the owner. 10. This was only start of 1994, just his third ARCA start overall, and he'd never even finished in the top-20 before this win (his prior starts even included a road course event at Heartland Park Topeka). 11. 23andJoe posted: 06.03.2014 - 6:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #2 owner: Junior Johnson #4 owner: James Hylton #62 owner: Barb Gardiner 12. Looking back I almost thought it was either an Indy Car or even Formula One race the way the Iowa media talked about it. Never would have guessed it was an ARCA race. Iowans tend to make everything that happens there sound like the greatest thing ever on the planet. 13. As said the Des Moines Grand Prix was mainly a Trans-Am race and in 1990s that was a legitimately high level show. Trans-Am ran several street course races in unusual cities where they were the main attraction during the late 1980s-late 1990s era with events in Dallas, Reno, Grand Rapids, MI, and Niagara Falls, Ontario. "The Coach" Jerry Glanville scores a top-10 in his ARCA debut. 14. SK posted: 05.11.2017 - 10:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) David Murry's best ARCA finish in 3 starts. 15. It was only the ninth road course race in ARCA history and just the fourth since 1965. 19. rm posted: 04.17.2021 - 7:07 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bigelow & Kosiski aren't found on the results sheet, which is usually pretty good about listing DNS entries should the situation arise. It would appear to be far more likely that they were DNQs or WDs instead. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
