Dill Whittymore and Doug Reid tangled going into Turn 1,setting up a short sprint to the checkers. Going into the final lap,Andy Thurman gets spun in front of a group of cars, causing a wreck that involves Bob Hill,Rob Smith,Kevin Ray and Ed Dixon. Hill gets the worst of it,as his car barrel rolls on the apron after the car gets upset by the transition from the banking to the flatter area of the track. Noone was injured,Hill climbed out of his car as soon as it had quit rolling. 3. This race was run right after the 1996 Busch Clash won by Dale Jarrett Shane Doles had a hard wreck in practice, his crew barely got the bright yellow #97 Pontiac (almost certainly an ex-Michael Waltrip Bahari car) back together in time for the race. He actually qualified with numbers made of tape on the car. ESPN covered their recovery from the track extensively and even equipped Doles' car with an on-board camera that they sponsored for this race. Shane's luck ran out right before the green flag when the right-side window of his car blew out and broke before the green and his team had to struggle to get a replacement, they didn't have a spare and they missed the green because of it (he made it out during the first caution and ran decent after that but dropped a cylinder). The window issues and checking for debris from it delayed the start. This was Darrell Lanigan's first race on pavement, hew trained for the race by getting an on-board camera tape from Ernie Irvan's #28 RYR Winston Cup team and watching it for hours. Lanigan, driving a bright green Ford T-Bird that was very likely an ex-Kenny Berstein #26 Quaker State car, didn't get much chance to put that research to work due to a blown engine early. Future ARCA legend Frank Kimmel started the #02 to get the points but handed it over to proper driver Rick Sheppard right after the green. Sports car racer Dale Kreider bought his car shortly before this race from Pete Orr's team. The #15 Chevy lasted only four laps before a mechanical problems caused a spin that brought out the first caution. His car ended up stopped at the enterance to pit road. Also of note in the second hand car market was Randal Ritter's strong-qualifying #31 Chevy which rather clearly had Terry Labonte's Kellogg's paint job on it minus some decal striping. The likely ex-Hendrick car ran good early but dropped back, fell a lap down and eventually fell out of the race. 5. He mostly ran the short and dirt tracks this year; competing in 15 out of the year's 25 races. The 1996 season would be the only one between 1992 and 2014 where Kimmel didn't run a full season (I wonder if his dabbling in the new NASCAR Truck series at the time played a role in that). 24. The Man of Steele never won at Daytona but this great run kicked off an eventual championship season for him. 26.
