This was a home track race for Frank and Bill as well as Darrell Basham, and while Frank finished second, Bill and Darrell DNF'd in their Pontiacs. Basham would go on to make what is almost certainly his final ARCA start in this race 21 years later - same title sponsor and all! 12. rm posted: 02.29.2020 - 11:47 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) There were 9 cautions for 75 laps, not 41 Thought that was an awfully low number of caution laps for Salem, and sure enough it was too low. The big crash featured a red flag and a 13-lap caution period. Perry Tripp spun in turn 4 and came to a stop in the groove with the field charging towards him. Bill Kimmel was the first one on the scene and when the smoke cleared, his car was sitting on top of Tripp's hood. Eric Smith, John Gill and Bobby Bowsher also piled in. Apparently during this race weekend, series officials announced that one of the late-season races had been canceled. The second-to-last race of the season was supposed to be at...Sebring! It was the second road course date to be canceled in 1996, with a much-anticipated street course race in Syracuse also biting the dust earlier in the year. 13.
