Sadly Steele's great season ended on a bitter note. With the 1997 title, his third in ARCA, already in the bag Steele was nearly killed in a testing crash at Atlanta causing him to miss the last race of the season and shattering his hopes of moving up full time to NASCAR's Cup series for 1998. In an odd twist, Steele was not the only Ford Racing driver with a winning record for 1997. Tommy Kendall won 11 of 13 SCCA Trans-Am series races that year. Ford also won the Manufacturers' Championship in the Cup series making it a very good year for the Blue Oval Boys. 2.
