The popular peanut farmer was running third off the last turn as second place Andy Hillenburg got a run to outside on leader Frank Kimmel. DeVane saw his chance and shot to the inside to pass both of them in an amazing 3-wide photo finish! Kimmel and Hillenburg got together just after the finish causing Andy to spin out and back the #80 into the turn 1 wall. DeVane took tires late to put himself in position to win. Hillenburg overcame an arcing spark plug in the closing laps to finish on the podium. This was the first ARCA race at Atlanta after the track was reconfigured and repaved. 1997 ARCA champion Tim Steele missed this race after being severely injured in a massive testing accident at Atlanta. The crash sadly derailed Steele's effort to move up to Winston Cup for 1998. 3. 18fan posted: 05.15.2010 - 2:46 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) This was actually the first race of any kind after the reconfiguration of Atlanta. 4. 18fan posted: 05.16.2010 - 2:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Wasn't it Kimmel that had the arcing spark plug problem? 5. potatosalad48 posted: 07.30.2010 - 3:19 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) CW Smith had a huge fire after crashing on pitroad in practice for this race. 6. Hillenburg looks up high to try to take the win from Kimmel. DeVane saw a shot at winning this race and decided to keep down low and try to pass the other two drivers. This worked and DeVane went on to win 1st ever ARCA Bondo/Mar-Hyde Series race ahead of Frank Kimmel. After the finish, Kimmel got into Hillenburg and Hillenburg's car backed into the Turn 1 wall. 8. It was a cold, rainy day in Atlanta and raindrops were shown on the windshields of the cars via in-car cameras multiple times. They were riding on board with Mark Gibson when he spun from the lead and crashed hard in turn 4. Greg Sarff smacked the wall hard on the first lap in the quad oval but did not get a caution. Mere seconds later, Rich Woodland was dumped coming out of turn 4 to bring out the first caution. Dwayne Leik, who spun to avoid Woodland's car, was stuck in the infield grass that was very very wet. 16. Ed Berrier and Frank Kimmel were battling for second when Laton crashed; when Laton went into the wall, Kimmel put on a power move on the outside and got by Berrier for what looked like may be the race-winning move. Harris Devane was on the verge of getting lapped before the final caution, but as the last car on the lead lap, came in to pit road under caution to put on tires and make an adjustment. Devane restarted third with two to go, setting up his famous move. 18. Kimmel was given the pole due to Steele's absence and many other fast cars like DeVane, Hillenburg, Ciochetti, and Shelmerdine started deep in the field due to being part-time entries. 26. RaceFanX posted: 03.21.2021 - 7:28 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The one-off #76 Brandon Industrial Pontiac ARCA owner/driver Mike Lorz fielded for Joe Cooksey in this race was certainly an ex-Kendall #40 Grand Prix from the now defunct NASCAR Cup team; it was even still liveried in Kendall Motor Oil's black, white, and red and yellow stripes scheme. Cooksey's day ended in a violent crash that saw him and Rick Sheppard spin before Cooksey got slightly airborne and blasted the wall head-on; destroying his car. Rick Sheppard ran this race as a teammate to Brian Conz, who planned to use the #26 Sheppard raced as an entrant in the Livonia Christmas Parade the week after this race back in Conz' hometown. I'm not sure if they made to the parade or not after Sheppard damaged the car in this race but he at least finished the race despite the incident with Cooksey.
