When Kirk wheeled his black #3 Chevrolet into victory lane in this rain-shortened race it was first-ever superspeedway win as a driver, he had scored a few previously, including a few at Atlanta, as Dale Earnhardt's Winston Cup crew chief. Mark Thompson was injured in a violent crash during this race, when Mike Ciochetti spun his blue-and-white #17 Ford in turn 3 he clipped Thompson which sent him on a collision course with the outside wall. Thankfully Thompson and his black #66 Ford were spared a head-on when Josh Baltes t-boned him pretty hard in his red #18 Ford, it was a rough hit but it deflected the car from a worse impact. Thompson still went into the outside wall hard and was knocked out in the crash and taken to a local hospital for observation afterward. Thompson was out of action in ARCA until Talladega in the fall because of the incident. The first lap was pure chaos as Bill Baird wrecked his transmission in his #52 Chevrolet right as the green fell, losing second and third gear, while at the same time the #06 Pontiac of Brian Conz started smoking at the back of the pack. Before they even got back to the start-finish line there was another incident as Bob Kelly put his green-and-yellow #53 Pontiac, a surplus ex-Chad Little Pontiac from the previous year's Winston Cup season, into the turn three wall head-on and several cars including the Texas flag-painted #37 of Randy Cook and the white #85 of Russell Landrum, carrying one of several ESPN on-board cameras, spun to miss him as he came down the track (Landrum missed him but then spun when he tried to accelerate on the still moist apron). All but Kelly were able to rejoin the race but Baird's issues eventually knocked him out of the race and Conz ended up many laps down because of his worries. It was Kelly's first ARCA start and wound up his only one of the 1998 season. 2. the Great Dave posted: 12.28.2012 - 4:42 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Thompson suffered a head injury and Kelly a Broken Leg.
