While Steele won the race that plan never came to pass; he ran a few more ARCA races later in the season and then moved up to the NASCAR Truck Series for 1999 instead. This was Steele's first win in a Ford Taurus. His comeback win at Pocono came in an older Thunderbird. Bobby Dotter made his first ARCA start of the season, starting and finishing a solid sixth. This Colorado race saw the #65 team pick up a one-race sponsorship from Colorado's popular beer brewers Coors and Dotter's Chevrolet was painted identically to Sterling Marlin's #40 Winston Cup car that season as a result. This was the first ARCA race ever in the State of Colorado. 13. The rookie had a rough day as he spun his black #22 Ford Thunderbird into the wall backward early in the race, losing a few laps as a result but he did get back out. Markovitz then spun again later in the race as the leaders were lapping him, resulting in another trip backward into the outside wall and this time the damage ended his day. This was the first of just two ARCA starts for him, with the latter being a possible start and park in 2003. 14. His #16 HSDie Ford was the class of the field and he was leading late when Gary Laton crashed out of the race backing his #74 Tampico Punch Chevrolet in the wall after contact with Dill Whittymore. Steele pitted with just 13 laps to go for four fresh tires and several other top-5 cars followed him; an unusual move in this era but Steele asked for it since it old tires were badly worn out. The Man of Steele proved the move was correct as he restarted sixth with just nine laps to go but quickly sliced through the field, getting all the way to second in just one lap. He ran down leader Bill Baird and roared past him in turn 3 before leading the last five laps en route to the win. Steele pulled away for the win at the end with the battle on the last lap being for second. Baird held off Frank Kimmel's late charge to maintain second. Kimmel also pitted late but only took two tires, it got him out in front of Steele but the Michigan racer quickly blew past him. Mark Gibson was feeling sick enough in the closing laps he considered handing the Jani-King #59 Ford off to a relief driver for the end of the race. Instead he ultimately toughed it out and finished seventh for his efforts. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
