With no more cars and very few points to fall back on, Steele's Lee Leslie-led crew was forced to head home emptyhanded. 2002 was the beginning of a long, drawn-out, unceremonious end to the ARCA legend's once-bright career. Like in 2001, Frank Kimmel tried to go for the double and sweep the races. Kimmel had won the Winston West race in 2001, but developed a miss in the engine while leading the closing laps of the ARCA race and ceded the win to Jason Jarrett. Running the same car in the Winston West race again in 2002, only with a Ford body instead of Chevrolet, Kimmel's West race ended extremely prematurely when he tangled with John Metcalf's #05 REMAX car on the first lap. In what must have been karma, the REMAX #05 was the one to crash out on the first lap of the ARCA race with Rick Carelli at the helm. Austin Cameron also reprised his role as a double-duty driver, with Mike Duncan joining Cameron & Kimmel as a new participant in both series' races. Cameron picked up a couple of DNFs but Duncan came home with a 2nd and an 8th, one of just two ARCA appearances for the west coast standout. Bob Aiello barely made it to the track in time after hitting a deer while towing his trailer out to Kansas. Aiello made repairs on the side of the road thanks to a local car dealership that delivered parts roadside and was more than happy to just be in the show, even if he was the second-to-last car running. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
