That said, there was a #18 Home Depot-sponsored car listed, to be driven by "Frank Rizzo" of New York, NY. (Interestingly, Frank Rizzo was a character of the phone pranksters The Jerky Boys.) It was only on race day that Tony Stewart now appeared behind the wheel of the black #18 Home Depot car (it was a black Chevy with HD decals and white #18s, nothing more). Tony had attempted the DuQuoin race in previous years, with a couple top-three finishes to show for it. He just wanted a win in a stock car on dirt; just sort of a "see, I can do it all" result. 8. He made three starts from 2001 to 2003, all at DuQuoin, and won the pole on the way to a top-2 finish in each one. Jim Eubanks' final ARCA start nets him his only top-10. 9. He came flying in and destroyed the stopped car of Perry Tripp. Ryan Unzicker had the wreck missed by tapping the wall, but stalled the car and could not refire it and had to retire) 18 crew chief - Jimmy Elledge Another Outdoor Channel classic, brought to you by Joe Moore, Tommy Praytor and a terrible greenscreen. At least we got a scrolling ticker and lap counts on occasion this time! This race was just 2 days after the race at Winchester, which would be rough normally, but the 2003 race at Winchester was notoriously hard on equipment, anchored by a late Chase Montgomery rollover. Terry English, the 2002 UMPA dirt late model champ, qualified second but wrecked on lap 1 trying desperately to keep up with Tony Stewart. After just a couple of laps, Stewart nearly had a full turn's lead over the pack. Shelby Howard had the lone Dodge in the field. His crew could never figure out how to keep the grille of his Dodge cool and dirt-free. He came down and made over a dozen pit stops trying to stop his car's overheating issues before he finally called it a day. Frank Kimmel made nearly as many pit stops with the same problems but was able to put it in the top 5! The track was extremely dusty as the track crew improperly prepared it following a rainstorm earlier in the weekend. During the fifth caution, they had to water down the track to try to drive down the dust. So, the ending of this race. The big Billy Thomas/Billy Venturini wreck at lap 97 caused the race to go to a green-white checkered situation. Just after taking the green flag on lap 103, Jerry Nemire and Jim Eubanks crashed big time on the frontstretch and took out a large portion of the guardrail on the inside wall between pit out and turn 1. A red flag was displayed immediately. The pace car at Duquoin, at the time, would enter and exit the track down just before turn 3. If anyone has been there or has watched enough races there, you should know that there's a bit of a shortcut to the garage back there. Anyway, the pace car came out and picked up the field before they got to the line to complete lap 104. The track crew quickly found suitable jersey barriers and set to work placing the replacement wall in. However, the officials determined the nasty-looking thunderstorm that was looming would hit the track before the wall was rebuilt so the race was called with the last scored lap, lap 103, being called the end. I suppose the proper designation for Eubanks and Nemire should be running but officially they crashed out, which isn't exactly wrong. It looked like it was the right call, as during Ken Schrader's post-race interview it looked like a tornado could touch down at any minute with how dark it suddenly was getting. 12.
