Norm Benning's seventh-place run was his only top-10 of the season. 4. Harmon was pretty good in the regional late model ranks but never pulled off a SES win. Norm was pretty good at hanging around in ARCA races and picked up several top 5s and top 10s by managing to stay on the lead lap and avoiding carnage. In the early 2000s, when Frank Kimmel was at his peak and Cup teams were starting to put full-on Cup cars in the series for drivers like Kyle Busch & Ryan Newman, finishing on the lead lap could almost be more of an achievement than a top 10 at select races. Definitely were a few top-10 DNFs in there on occasion as well! 8. Strait was leading on the last lap when hometown hero Justin Allgaier got inside him in Turn 3 and pulled off the pass for the win, leading only the money lap as he scored his breakthrough victory to the cheers of the crowd. Strait tried to pass Allgaier back but got loose off Turn 4 allowing Frank Kimmel and Mark Gibson to sneak by and take the other podium positions while he fell to third. Allgaier's first career win came in his 37th ARCA start. Making this win more impressive was that the engine on his #16 Pontiac had an audible miss to it all day but he still pulled off the victory. Allgaier was the first local driver ever to win a national-level race here on the Springfield oval. The day was a big one for Kimmel as he and Bobby Gerhart came in tied for the ARCA points lead. Gerhart's early retirement with a blown engine and Kimmel's runner-up performance allowed Frank to shoot out into a big lead in the points standings...and he'd go on to win the ARCA title. A.J. Fike had a great run in this one come apart at the end. He led a nice chunk of the race and was second behind Strait in the closing laps when the #12 Ford ran out of gas under caution. He'd get rolling again but placed 18th, one lap down. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
