He stated that he'd rather his team spread their budget over the other 20 races in the season instead of trying to compete with the superspeedway ringers and Cup teams that only run Daytona and Talladega. Well, the 2006 season came around and for the first time, Kimmel was not running away with the championship and was stuck in a fight with Bobby Gerhart of all people. That might not have been that shocking to those that only caught a few races a year and were used to seeing Gerhart dominate Daytona, but even to those that kept a close eye on the series it was a surprise to see Gerhart throw his hat into the ring for a full season after picking up three top fives in the first four races. While Kimmel had a bit of a cushion entering this race, all it would take to give Gerhart a fighting chance was for Kimmel to wreck out while Gerhart cruised to another plate victory. So against the longtime word of Frank and crew chief/brother Bill, the team arranged for Roush Racing to build them a superspeedway car for this race and the move paid off with Frank getting a big win. And he sure needed it, too, as Frank was one of several strong cars that dropped out early the following race at Iowa with mechanical issues. The 215 point margin of victory was the smallest of any of Kimmel's 10 titles. Kimmel wasn't necessarily "bad," per se, at the plate tracks, but they weren't a major point of emphasis for him at any point in his career. He ultimately wound up 0-for-25 at Daytona and 2-for-23 at Talladega, with both of those wins coming in races that ended early. Kimmel made 10+ ARCA starts at 18 different race tracks in his career, and the two plate tracks represented some of his worst average position efforts. His average start of 16.0 at Talladega and 21.1 at Daytona are well below his overall career average of 8.6. Frank typically preferred the strategy of riding around near the back of the main pack, staying out of trouble, and it served him well in the big picture - a single crashout at Talladega and zero at Daytona would prove that point. He had just five plate DNFs total, and one of those came with Bob Hill at the wheel in relief after Kimmel had a big crash in qualifying. If you take nothing else away from this long-winded comment, it should be that if you plan to ride around in the back at a plate race, properly timing your move back to the front is very important: 12 top ten starts, 32 top ten finishes in 48 races for Frank Kimmel. Talk about executing your strategy perfectly! 18. Rich posted: 08.25.2020 - 7:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Rick Allen and Dan Pardus were the commentators.
