The Dodge didn't work out, he swtiched to Fords starting with the next race and was later sponsored by Ford later in the season. 2. The Big One was caused when Kyle Krisiloff peaked out from 2nd to look for the lead, but dipped back in line right in front of Justin Marks, turning Krisiloff around in front of the field. Simultaneously, Gabi Dicarlo got Brian Scott loose near the back of the pack and Scott spun, collecting a few trailing cars at the same time as all hell broke loose up front. Landon Cassill was racing the same car that Jeff Gordon had run in the 2007 July Daytona race. 16. RaceFanX posted: 05.19.2017 - 4:20 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) The large entry list for this one isn't surprising given this was the first ARCA race after the NASCAR NEXTEL/Sprint Cup Series adopted full-time use of the "Car of Tomorrow." With that series' old cars still mostly matching ARCA specs a lot of teams were able to score good quality Cup surplus equipment on the cheap for the 2008 season. The Cup switchover would initially be a blessing for ARCA but would become an issue in future years as the supply of old NASCAR castoff stockers started to run low when ARCA never legalized CoT racers (the series instead legalized ex-Busch/Nationwide equipment). John Wes Townley makes his ARCA debut. The fast food heir turned in a solid first race as he finished just outside the top-10 while kicking off his lone full-season ARCA campaign. 21. Between the Nur Ali & Dario Franchitti experiments, Max Dumarey crossing over and the usual gaggle of Canadian drivers, there were 3+ nationalities in the ARCA Daytona field for the first time in at least 2 decades - if not longer than that. 25. rm posted: 04.28.2020 - 9:13 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Norm Benning kicks off what would be his final full-time ARCA season - for now, anyway - by becoming the first beneficiary of the free pass in ARCA. While NASCAR adopted the lucky dog rule in late 2003, ARCA did not implement it until the 2007-2008 offseason. Unfortunately for Norm, getting his lap back didn't improve his day as he had found himself a lap down in the first place due to mechanical issues that led to him parking his car just past halfway. None of the other three drivers that got the free pass fared much better, with JR Heffner rebounding the best to finish 16th, one lap down, though Benning was the only one who recorded a DNF. From the realm of strange but true, the last decade's worth of ARCA champions competed in this race. 1999 champ Bill Baird finished 3rd while 1998 and 2000-2007 champ Frank Kimmel finished 5th. It's not nearly as fun a fact when you explain it, shh... Michael McDowell, the reigning rookie of the year, joined the booth to remark on the fact that he was going to be jumping up to Cup in 2008, just a year after he entered this race as a driver with just a single-digit amount of stock car races under his belt. McDowell said he was surprised to be in that position with such little experience, and unfortunately, it showed during the 2008 season. A very inexperienced driver of one full season and a struggling startup team of one full season made for a poor combination...who knew? 26. Annett dominated the ladder portion of this race, with Justin Allgaier pushing him from behind. 11 years, and one week later, Michael Annett would win the Xfinity Series race at Daytona, dominating the ladder half of the race, with Justin Allgaier pushing him from behind 27.
