On what would turn out to be the penultimate restart of the race, Sean Caisse spun out leader Justin Allgaier but no yellow flew. Allgaier was running a one-off for Venturini Motorsports and crew chief Billy Venturini flew off the box, as expected, and immediately hunted down the 01 crew on pit road. Upon further review, the replay showed that Allgaier actually made a late block on Caisse, but this seemed like one of the few times that Billy V's anger was justified at first glance. On the final restart of the race, Caisse was sitting in 3rd coming through the final corners when Matt Hawkins ran up the track and clipped Caisse, sending the AISIN machine of Caisse hard into the outside wall. Caisse limped across the line and finished 16th while Allgaier roared back to a disappointing 8th. As mentioned in an earlier RaceFanX comment, this was Hawkins' last ARCA start before he tragically died during the 2008-09 offseason. 11. rm posted: 08.06.2018 - 10:43 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) It should be fairly noted that Billy Venturini took the high road in a post-race interview, taking the time to praise Germain's operation (Caisse & Hattori ran the 01 car out of that shop) and Justin Allgaier's ability despite Allgaier usually being a rival to the VMS stable of drivers. Allgaier finished off 2008 by winning the ARCA title (including a dramatic win at Talladega where he made a last lap pass on Venturini youngster Joey Logano) and inking a deal with Penske to run Nationwide races for that organization full-time in 2009. Billy Venturini had dubbed Allgaier "the best little driver available in all of the land" in the post-race interview, and while Allgaier struggled to just 1 top ten in 76 Cup Series starts, Allgaier has enjoyed success in the Nationwide/Xfinity Series to the tune of 7 wins and 8 top-6 points finishes in as many years. 12. Glad he did this time. 13. rm posted: 08.12.2018 - 8:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) And within a week of that comment I previously made, Allgaier added his 8th Xfinity win and his first on American road course since winning at NJMP later in the 2008 season, a little less than 2 months after this race and nearly 10 years to present day. 14. rm posted: 10.22.2019 - 12:17 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) 7 owner - Frank Kapfhammer 21 owner - Mark Gibson 39 owner - Fred Hawkins One of several 2008 races that the mercurial Sean Caisse dominated but did not win. In a twist of irony, his lone ARCA win came the next year in a fuel mileage finish where he led just 3 of 200 laps. 15.
