However in the race itself she becomes a wrecking ball, taking out hard charging Daytona winner John Wes Townley and then triggering the Big One. 4. Armstrong also recorded his first career top ten finish in ARCA. His previous best finish in two prior starts was 15th at Salem Speedway last year. For Jones it was also just his 5th career top ten finish in 50 career ARCA starts (first since 2009), and his first top ten finish on a track bigger than 9/10 of a mile. First career ARCA top tens for John Ferrier (6th) and George Cushman (8th) as well. Ferrier's previous best finish in five prior starts was 16th in his ARCA debut at Daytona in 2009. Cushman's previous best finish in seven prior starts was 14th at Pocono in 2011. Brennan Newberry's 11th place finish is his first non-top ten finish in four career starts. (#3) Drew Charlson had to have been the "lucky dog" during one of the cautions because he lost a lap from that big wreck and lined up on the inside of the leaders for one of the final restarts, but managed to finish on the lead lap in 15th place. Thomas Praytor's team reportedly fired their spotter after Praytor cut down into Milka Duno just prior to the big wreck. Praytor had been running inside the top ten prior to that incident, but lost the lead draft shortly thereafter and wound up cutting a tire down and darted up into Darrell Basham in the middle of a turn. Justin Boston was none too kind to teammate Milka Duno in his post-crash interview (he crashed out in both superspeedway races this year), saying "Whenever you got the #35 [car] in front of you, you gotta pray." Will Kimmel went from finishing 3rd at Salem last weekend to having to start-and-park after just four laps in this race. When that team has funding, they normally run really well, but unfortunately they didn't have the funding to compete today. Several drivers made idiotic moves that resulted in further wrecked cars on that restart wreck. Galen Hassler didn't slow down as two cars in front of him pretty much came to a stop, and wound up plowing into Donnie Neuenberger, who then was sent into the stopped car of James Hylton like a pinball. One stupid move knocked two cars out of the race, and both of those cars were innocent victims in that ordeal. Tom Hessert and some choice words for Spencer Gallagher as he approached Gallagher's car following their crash in the big wreck. It wasn't Gallagher's fault as he just happened to be in the right place and the wrong time when Hessert moved up the track to avoid a couple cars and wound up sending both of them into the wall. I wouldn't be surprised if he was just mad at the fact that it was Gallagher who he got into, and maybe some prior frustrations with Gallagher set him off. That little eye roll that Gallagher made that was caught on camera as Hessert walked away was classic. If he ever makes it into NASCAR on a full-time basis (which I hope he does), he would make a great heel race car driver. He reminds me a lot like Kyle Busch personality-wise, only not as whiny. In his mind, it's never his fault and he doesn't mind racing others dirty. That's the kind of driving style that we need more of in NASCAR, and I hope that he succeeds because he would make for a good heel that we can admire for his on-track ability, yet boo him just because we can't stand him. I'll be sure to watch his career more closely from here on out. 5. Chives posted: 05.04.2013 - 12:36 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) This whole race was just one big ROFL moment. Milka Duno continues to prove that while she can drive a car with nobody around here, she is an absolute weapon when racing with others. Both Townley and Boston were pissed at her. I love it! Candidate for quote of the year for Boston. Great strategy by Josh Williams and a few others to gamble with the weather. Awesome for Terry Jones to get a top-5 out of this race. Also, a top-10 for George Cushman! 6. FHgrad99 posted: 05.04.2013 - 1:47 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was an expensive race for Venturini Motorsports. Caleb Armstrong was the only one of their cars that finished the race in one piece. This was the first ARCA race at Daytona or Talladega in a while where cars were the outside lane was able to make progress towards the front. The last few years the strategy was basically run along the yellow line, no matter what. 8. Mike posted: 05.04.2013 - 4:03 am Rate this comment: (0) (3) I wouldn't really say Milka was at fault for either wreck, is the thing. The first time, she got pinched between Townley and the lapped car (James Swanson, I think). There was no way she could have gotten out of the way fast enough there. The second time, Praytor came down in front of her. 9. Paul posted: 05.04.2013 - 4:16 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) I'll give Duno a slight pass for the second wreck, but the first wreck was all her fault. Video shows that her left front has squeezed in between Townley and the right rear of the lapped car, and yet she just swerved right into Townley as if he wasn't even there or if she didn't realize that she was already starting to get beside of the lapped car. That one was 100% her fault. I'll give her a pass on the second one because she did have to get out of the throttle for this guy who decided to just blindly follow his spotter's orders instead of checking his mirrors (and Praytor's spotter was fired in the middle of the race for that), and her getting out of the throttle, while it could have been avoided if she would have dove down to the apron right there and tried to safely merge back onto the race track, did cause the massive check-up right behind her. That one I'll give her a pass on. But the first wreck was all her fault. She should have done one of two things: Either keep going straight, because I guarantee you that she would have cleanly gotten beside Townley and the lapped car had she just held her line, or gently tap the brakes a few times and allow Tonwley to pass her so she could safely follow him past the lapped car and/or catch her breath and give herself a little more time to make a rational decision. Instead, she pulls a move that Danica would have been proud of (2012 Daytona 500, folks) and just darts right into her teammate who very well could have won the race if he could have gotten to the front. That's just bad driving, straight up. 10. 83andJoe posted: 05.04.2013 - 6:28 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) This may have been Bobby Gerhart's last ARCA race. From Speed51: "We spoke to Bobby Gerhart this morning at Talladega and he was still upset about his time being disallowed yesterday in post-qualifying tech. Initially we asked him about what they found wrong with his car. "I think they didn't like the color," replied Gerhart, a former winner at Talladega. According to Gerhart, ARCA did not like how the right-front spring sat in the helix early in the day yesterday, so his team fixed it according to how the series officials wanted it done. After qualifying ARCA found the infraction and penalized Gerhart. It involved the same issue that was reportedly told to the teams earlier. "I'm done," said Gerhart, an eight-time ARCA winner at Daytona Int'l Speedway. "I'm not happy and the only way to show my displeasure is to not show up. I'll race somewhere else." Gerhart planned to race in 12 events this year." 11. That said, I think Milka did go right a little too quick, but she was trying not to cause a huge wreck. Also, JWT did come down on her (I doubt he knew the lap down car was right there). So I blame all 3 cars for his wreck. The big one was easily 100% the 2's fault. I don't get why Milka is getting the blame there at all. 14. Kevin Nauta posted: 05.04.2013 - 12:03 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) As much as I love cheering on the Peterson Motorsports team, this was clearly a case where the speed differential between front and back cars in an ARCA race can be a real problem. Pole speed for Milka was over 178 mph and she wasn't the fastest car on the track. James Swanson was practicing in the 162 range. Put that car in the way of a lead pack at full throttle and you are bound to have problems. Watch the replay...the #06 almost takes out the car BEHIND Milka as well. That said, the announcers foreshadowed what would happen by consistently noting Milka's car running out of line with the others. She seemed to want to run a half groove up--if that car could have stayed down just a bit better, you might have seen neither wreck happen. Is that a set-up problem or a driver problem? That would be a question to ask Bill Venturini. When he's done fixing all those cars.... 15. Anonymous posted: 05.04.2013 - 1:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) @13. Stop trolling. Maybe Venturini will think about not renting rides anymore, knowing it winds up costing him more than what the moneybags bring to the team. 19. 83andJoe posted: 05.04.2013 - 5:40 pm Rate this comment: (1) (2) #15: Takes one to know one. Galen had one of his buddies spot, who did a subpar job. He didn't mentioned the wreck on the radio until Galen had already driven through it. Hopefully Galen learned his lesson, and next time has one of our spotters (who are both ARCA drivers themselves) spot for him. He does nothing when running in NASCAR and the Nationwide race the following day was more proof. Tom Hessert is going nowhere accept possibly another car owner in due time. I don't care how many races he wins in ARCA. This race was proof that as long as the check does not bounce the Venturini family will put anybody in a car. Such a shame when their cars are clearly the class of the field week in and week out. 23.
