A highly entertaining Salem race sees young Christian Eckes finally claim his first ARCA win after coming oh so close multiple times last year. Eckes held off his even younger teammate, Chandler Smith, to get the checkers. Smith blew a tire on the last lap, ending his run half a lap from the finish. He wound up in the hospital but was released shortly afterwards. A scary moment on pit road happened under the first caution. Bret Holmes pulled out and hit several members of Gus Dean's crew on the narrow Salem pit lane, with the rear tire changer appearing to get the worst of it. The long caution period was to ensure the crew member left the track safely via the crossover gate on the frontstretch. I believe he was airlifted to a hospital from there. 3. Look at the points standings. Sheldon Creed and Natalie Decker could finish 1-2 by season's end just for showing up to every race. 6. 34McDowellFan posted: 04.22.2018 - 11:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think the only WD was Brad Smith, I never saw the #2 or #3 on the entry list 7. Honestly, you could probably skip up to a quarter of the 20 races schedule and still have the points lead if you pick up multiple wins and consistent top-5's. Last season, only 8 drivers ran the full schedule, and three of those had zero top-10's. 8. JSPorts posted: 04.22.2018 - 11:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Looks like this was a competitive race. Chandler Smith is very talented, I look forward to watching him down the road. 9. They're probably trying to keep their composite car in one piece for Talladega on Friday. The #48 should probably be listed as 'did not start' because Brad blew the engine in qualifying but still posted a time good enough to get him into the field. They didn't have a backup engine so they did not start. The #25 and #99 were also involved in caution #3. Despite the #20 and #15 leading most of the day and the relatively low car count, this was a very competitive and entertaining race. Chandler Smith had the best car but kept losing the lead on restarts and pit road. For the most of the last run, he was right behind Eckes and got beside him a couple times but couldn't get around him in lapped traffic. Smith hit the wall hard going into turn 1 on the final lap and rode the wall all the way through turn 2. A lot of people sitting around me were upset that ARCA didn't throw the caution. 11. Anthony posted: 04.23.2018 - 12:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @11 as kevin20fan explained, the #25 was involved in a caution. The damage was quite severe and as an end result, she fell many laps down based on the poor handling with that repair damage. 13. oldschoolracing519 posted: 04.23.2018 - 12:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #22 crew chief is Chad Bryant 14. rm posted: 04.23.2018 - 12:54 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) 48 never turned a lap in qualifying, actually. Agree that the 0 did take the green flag as well. Both Hixson cars were on the original entry list but when they didn't find a pair of drivers Wayne withdrew them. I'm glad actually ARCA let it finish under green. Probably would have been some carnage on the restart. Just wasn't going to be necessary. The 46 spun over in turn 2 in his caution. They had issues all day. The car didn't start and had to get a push during the pace laps. He stalled it when he spun over in turn 4 the first time and lost several laps. Then he had to get a push when he spun over on the other end of the track as well. Jack Dossey III made his ARCA debut and was all over the track. He suffered some pretty good nose damage running into the back of another car in turn 4 at one point and ran the tires off the car at the end. With about 10 to go and no tires left in the pits, he parked it on pit road after blowing a front tire. Gotta give a callout to Mike Basham. They blew the engine in qualifying and spent a lot of the night trying to fix it in their shop just a short ways away from Salem. They finally made it back to the track and passed tech mere moments before the green flag and Mike ran well all day. With a few well-timed cautions, Mike was actually on the lead lap for a lot of the middle part of the race. The long green flag run to the finish is what set the 34 most of their laps down. It was still their best short track showing since Madison last year, when Mike also finished only 5 laps down. 15. rm posted: 04.23.2018 - 1:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Also - 0 was a Chevy To the rear: 34 - engine change; 99 - unapproved adjustments; 0 - driver choice; 10, 11 - pitting before the green flag 16. Willsome429 posted: 04.23.2018 - 1:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @5 and 7: No, Creed and Decker aren't going to go 1-2 by showing up for the whole schedule. Purdy, Braden, Holmes, Herbst, Dean and Praytor are all running full schedules. Not all of them are the most competitive but Purdy, Herbst and Dean are good bets. In regards to skipping a quarter of the races and keeping the points lead, Eckes is skipping five races so we'll see how that goes. 17. rm posted: 04.23.2018 - 1:57 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) There's bonus points awarded for racing blocks of 5 races in a row on the schedule and also for running the whole schedule. It's not impossible to win the championship on a partial season but it's pretty difficult and you'd have to win a lot and have misfortune fall on the side of the other frontrunners. Zane Smith or Creed are probably the championship favorites. I'd be shocked if one of them does not win the title. 18. JSPorts posted: 04.23.2018 - 2:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I agree, I think Creed is the favorite so far, but Smith has a shot. You can't count out Herbst or Purdy either, but I think they're in line for a good battle for 3rd. 19.
