He missed the 3rd race of the season due to the flu (I think), and finished last at Talladega after a crash! What a great comeback by Eckes! Took a little bit of luck by Micheal Self, but a great run from the both of them! 2. They made it, but not by much. Eckes quickly worked his way through the back of the field but saw what he didn't need to see ahead of him: Michael Self leading laps, and a lot of them. Eckes had a 15 point lead heading into the race and when Self clinched the most laps led at halfway, Eckes' lead was down to just 5 points. He was going to have to pass Self in order to win the championship - and that's exactly what he did. The 25 point margin of victory in the standings was the tightest race since Patrick Sheltra held off Craig Goess by 20 points in 2010. It was the first time since 2012 that the championship battle actually went down to the wire in the final race. Lots of teams ran into trouble during the day. Scott Melton spun in qualifying and then blew a tire and smacked the wall on his hot lap. Joe Graf Jr.'s car never fired in qualifying and the team had to replace his ignition. Carson Ware also never made a qualifying lap and spent a lot of the race off the pace a bit. It was the first time Rick Ware Racing fielded an ARCA entry since 2010. (The Smithley entry from 2015 listed here was an Andy Hillenburg car, not Ware's) Once the race got underway, Harrison Burton hit the wall early and had to make a pit stop right away. Riley Herbst had to make an unscheduled stop before the first caution and cut a right rear tire in the closing laps, dropping him well back in the order by the finish. Sheldon Creed had to make an unscheduled stop late as well. 4 owner - David Gilliland 1 sponsor - Fast Track High Performance Driving School 7 sponsor - CCM/ETRM Software 11 sponsor - Double H Ranch Darrell Waltrip Throwback WD: Thad Moffitt - 46 - Performance Plus - John Corr - Chevrolet DC: Con Nicolopoulos - 0 - GreatRailing.com - Wayne Peterson - Chevrolet 7. That turned out to be a very good thing after Harrison Burton's early issues related to hitting the wall put the Ruud Toyota Camry down the running order, although they'd still place 12th at the end of the night. The team won six times in 2019 with Burton's Daytona win joined by five short track wins by Chandler Smith. Smith drove all of the short track races that make up most of the schedule with Burton, Logan Seavey, Myatt Snyder, and Brandon Lynn also taking turns driving the #20 this season. Burton announced he'd be running a full-time NASCAR Xfinity Series effort in 2020 during the lead up to this race weekend. This race was initially scheduled to air live on Fox Sports 2 but rearrangements in programming pushed it off TV. Instead the race was streamed live on NASCAR.com but then aired in its entirety later in the night on Fox Sports 1 after the conclusion of its coverage of Game 5 of Major League Baseball's American League Championship Series (The New York Yankees beat the Houston Astros 4-1). 8. In ARCA the champion cannot be named Rookie of the Year in the same season so while Eckes came into this race leading Tommy Vigh, Jr. in the rookie points by 72 markers he was only going to win the honor if he lost the title. He won the championship so as a result Vigh gets to be the Rookie of the Year. Vigh's race would be one to forget as the #10 Ford fell out early. 9. TTaylor944 posted: 10.20.2019 - 11:59 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) It has been like that for many years. I think the idea was to highlight a first year driver who had a strong season but may have been overshadowed by another rookie winning the championship (potentially in much better equipment). 12. TTaylor944 posted: 10.20.2019 - 12:02 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) To tag on, Ty Dillon and Chris Buescher were probably the most interesting rookie pairs in recent memory. Dillon had the title on lock fairly early, and it looked like Buescher would get the consolation rookie title. Buescher actually managed to pull ahead and win the rookie standings by two points, despite Dillon beating him for the title. 13. rm posted: 10.20.2019 - 12:13 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) In the case of 2011, Dillon was the best driver over the course of all 19 races but Buescher's best 15 races - the total that counts towards the ROTY title - were better than Dillon's best 15 races. A very interesting quirk for sure. Usually the second-best rookie that would get the ROTY had a very good season of their own - most recently, Dalton Sargeant in 2016 when rookie Chase Briscoe won the championship - but it's magnified this year with the large disparity between Eckes' season and Vigh's season. 14. Just wondering how Eckes would've been eligible to begin with. 15. rm posted: 10.20.2019 - 1:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) You do have to declare. As to why he's still eligible to be a rookie despite running nearly a season and a half's worth of races before 2019, I can't help you there. Can't say I really understand that rule. Something about being under 18 and/or making a certain number of superspeedway starts. 16. Yeley. Uniquely Ware's entry was a Toyota while Yeley drove a Ford in the Cup race. 17. Too cheap and incompetent for NASCAR, so they stay in ARCA. 21. rm posted: 10.25.2019 - 9:43 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) First caution - laps 40-46 - 4 accident turn 4; free pass - 77 Second caution - Laps 53-57 - 06 spin turn 2; free pass - 18 Additional to the rear: 0, 1, 10, 48 - driver choice 23 crew chief is Shane Huffman, not Hoffman 22.
