While not officially scored, Ted Smokstad drove the "V8" test car for
the GM LS1-based "LASER" engine the ASA would use from 2000 until the end.

After starting at the rear of the field, he was actually leading laps in
the final quarter of the race, and finished 8th according to the TNN
scoring (he would back out of the way of the leaders near the end, so as
to not interfere in the finish).

That's cool. Did they tell him to not win intentionally, or did he just
fall back?
