He and Casey Smith (Who came later in the season) were a couple of young standouts from the Legends division who had hoped to make it up to upper-level stock cars at a young age. Sorenson obviously was the one who got through, albeit with only moderate success. 3. RaceFanX posted: 04.07.2015 - 8:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kyle Busch was a reluctant ASA regular in 2002. After making a splash in some NASCAR Truck races the prior season he got locked out of the season finale at California because he was underage to be exposed to the Marlboro sponsorship of a companion CART race. NASCAR's new for 2002 age limit required drivers to be at least 18 to run in its major series leading to 17-year-old Busch being kept out of NASCAR for the season. With no way to run in higher series Roush Racing lined up Kyle, then one of their development drivers, with an ASA ride in Noah Yoder's #07 Ford. 4. The new effort would prove a good one, Garvey raced for WJP throughout the remainder of ASA's existence, but their first race didn't go as hope. Garvey had some issues early and fell back. While working his way back to the front the new #17 Chevrolet didn't come up to speed on a restart after a serious brake failure leading to contact with ASA rookie Richard Fincher, making his debut in a #53 Chevy owned by former ASA standout Scott Hansen (who acted as his crew chief in this race after leaving the ASA series full-time as a driver after 2001), and it ended with Garvey getting the outside wall on his way to the sidelines. 5.
