He spun early in the race looked to be well out of it before Kyle Busch dropped out, allowing Clanton to move up a spot and get enough points to clinch the title. 2. I remember watching this after the Winston Cup race, and I couldn't believe how close the title fight was! What a treat to find ASA results on racing-reference! 5. No caution was waved and to add insult to injury Clanton had to do a stop and go penalty, all but handing the championship to St. Amant. 7. What do you expect for October in the Midwest? 8. St. Amant would win the race, claiming his second Winchester 400 in three years by doing so, but Clanton's third place finish, as noted above resulting from Kyle Busch's late retirement, was just enough to dramatically nip Gary by just one point as he claimed his only ASA title in the process. This was Clanton's last race as an ASA regular as he choose not to defend his championship to instead pursue a ride in higher level NASCAR, ultimately he landed with the Brewco Busch team mid-season in 2003 but found little success. St. Amant would return to ASA in 2003 but the following season would not be as successful as this one. Cywinski would rebound from this defeat to win the title in 2003. 9. St Amant won, but with a handfull of laps to go Kyle Busch lost a wheel and wrecked hard in turn 4. This allowed Clanton to win the war by one point. Clanton had a real go of it as he was involved in two incidents mid race, one where he checked up trying to pass Mike Garvey, only to get hit by Todd Kleuver, and then a second where cut a tire and got run over by Gary St Amant. Clanton would attempt to move over to the Busch Series first with Brewco then Trucks with the Zaxby's team. St Amant would return to the series for 2003 but suffered through a miserable season that saw him switch owners mid season and miss a race due to an injury suffered in Mansfield. Cywinski would return too, but under much better circumstances, winning the 03 title before slowly migrating into team ownership in ARCA. 10. Joey Clanton cut a tire down and almost lost the championship. He slowed and attempted to wreck St Amant who was leading. St Amant dumped him spinning Clanton to the inside and ASA did not throw the caution as a result of Clanton's classless actions. A few laps later Kyle Busch's rear wheel falls off allowing Clinton to pick up five points and win championship. A classic race indeed! 11.
