The race was run under green flag conditions almost all the way through as the teams knew that a mighty storm was advancing towards the track. Eventually, the race got to the point where drivers needed to come make green-flag pit stops to avoid running out of gas - not something you'd usually expect to see from a late model division. Nathan Haseleu was the last of the leaders to pit, having a gap of nearly 2 full laps on the field by virtue of being the lone driver staying out so long. When Haseleu pit, he took off with the catch can still attached, drawing a black flag and he had to return to pit road to have it removed. As he rolled down pit road to serve out his penalty, the rain finally arrived and soaked the speedway at about the most inconvenient time possible for drivers and series officials alike. The red flag was thrown and Jon Lemke was declared to be the leader as the officials were ready to call the race early and name a winner. Half an hour passed after the red and checkered flags were waved, yet nobody had actually won the race at that moment in time. Finally, after 35 minutes, officials rolled back some scorecards and ruled that Jeff Kendall had won instead of Lemke. Haseleu was disappointed that the rain couldn't have arrived just minutes sooner so that he would have won in undisputed fashion. Neither Lemke or Kendall were particularly certain about the outcome that the officials doled out, but Kendall wasn't going to ask questions and celebrated with his trophy in front of a grandstand that had long since emptied. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
