With rain threatening very early in the night, it seemed unlikely that
the race would hit halfway before being stopped - much less the full 300
laps. Everyone behaved, though, and they very nearly made it the entire
distance. The first caution didn't come out until lap 208, but the
caution period dragged on for nearly 20 laps as everyone dipped onto pit
road on the first time and created a scoring calamity.
Jon Lemke used the four fresh tires to get back past Steve Carlson for
the lead, but Carlson pushed back with the dark clouds swirling. Carlson
saw his chance when the leaders' lines changed upon Lemke putting Paul
Menard down a lap, and when Carlson couldn't make his move on the inside
of Lemke work the result was Lemke going for a spin on lap 245. A
displeased Lemke threw on his last set of tires but another few laps
were eaten up as they tried to decide if Menard had gotten back on the
lead lap or not in the chaos. When the race resumed, it was only
momentary until the rain finally arrived. Lemke charged from seventh to
third but that was as far as he could get.

Lemke was eager to point out that Carlson had done the exact same thing
to him in a different late model race the year prior at Elko, except
that Carlson got to celebrate with the trophy this time instead of
having his car towed back on the hook right next to Lemke's. Lemke, ever
the good sport, insisted there was no ill will though.
