This was Cale Yarborough's Grand National East debut and the track hyped
it up for all it was worth and then some. This would be Yarborough's
first major short track race in a year and a half as he only ran a
handful of Cup races in 1971 and 1972 on the big tracks while he focused
on trying to switch over to the USAC Champ Cars. Ultimately he'd already
made his last IndyCar appearance before running this race, it's hard to
imagine a guy going from a top-10 at the Indy 500 to a South Carolina
short track shootout two months later these days.

Rather than hold time trials the starting lineup for this one was set by
the order the drivers signed in at the track for the race.
