He was one of many, many drivers attempting to make the main event. 56 drivers entered for a race that was only supposed to start 24, though the promoter worked to start 30 of them after the surge of late would-be participants. Waltrip bought out Bill Clemons' AMC Javelin for the show but ultimately settled for a DNF when, by his guess, a rod broke while he was running second. Waltrip lost the engine in his original entry in practice courtesy of a faulty valve. Neil Castles was in a similar predicament, as the defending GNE champ would have missed the race had the field size not increased by six spots after having to go to a backup car when his 1973 Dodge had major problems. The race was being put on by ARCA and its officials, but apparently the field size grew only after there was some kind of contentious back-and-forth between the NASCAR brass in attendance and the ARCA officials. Margin of victory - "about 150 yards" or, alternately, "half a straight-away" Attendance - 7,272 First caution - laps 40-48 - 88 oil on track Makes: Copley - 1973 Ford Dalton - 1972 Chevrolet DC: Bill Clemons - 37 - Clemons Racing - Bill Clemons - 1973 AMC DNQs: Earl Balmer (Did not pass technical inspection and had his entry refused) Leonard Blanchard Richard Childress James Climer Iggy Katona Bill Kimmel Sr. Elmo Langley Ed Negre Vic Parsons John Sears JT Smith (1973 Chevrolet) John Sommerville WD: Dave Marcis (1972 Chevrolet owned by Dave Deppe) Marcis crashed the day before this race and had to withdraw. Same make/owner combination should be listed at Tri-County/Westchester & Toledo. Several star drivers that had made soft commitments to running the GNE/ARCA tripleheader bailed when they instead received invites to come and run the big-money USAC stock car race at Pocono scheduled for the same day as this event. It was an easy call for most drivers, as only the top two finishers in each GNE/ARCA race would pull in more than the last-place payout at Pocono. With this weekend being open on the Cup calendar, once word spread of a few drivers planning to run the Pocono race, several more tagged along at the last minute - including that race's winner, Richard Petty. 13.
