This was the lone Grand National East race at Heidelberg Raceway where Colella was a local racer. A rare case of a local guy running with Cale, Bobby and Buddy and whooping them all. Heidelberg Raceway closed down a few months later 2. Jeff Wagoner posted: 05.07.2010 - 3:41 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) This race was co-sanctioned with ARCA. 3. Like Colella, this is the only NASCAR race tracked on the site at present for Wearing (though he did have some NASCAR experience in the form of sporadic appearances on the Modified tour in the 70s). Tiny Lund, on his way to the 1973 series championship, did accurately point out ahead of time that after doing some scouting, the Heidelberg race probably had the best chance all year of a nationally-unknown local driver coming in and making a splash by showing up the NASCAR contingent. There were a few Heidelberg regulars that opted to not run the ARCA/NASCAR race as they were worried about either tearing up their cars against the touring drivers or were unwilling to make the engine changes necessary in order to be ARCA/NASCAR-legal. Among that group was Kenny Hemphill - father of future one-time ARCA standout Ryan Hemphill - and Norm Benning, who would eventually go on to start nearly 300 ARCA races. 10.
