The 1973 win counted as an East series win, even though both races featured a mix of drivers and cars from both series. The change came about after Grand National became Winston Cup, and the shorter length events were purged from that schedule. 8. This was his first NASCAR race of any kind after his sudden mid-race retirement during the Talladega where he pulled into the pits and quit on the spot three months earlier. Back on the short tracks where he was more comfortable he drove a second Richard Howard Chevrolet with his one-off #1 proving quite potent, he lead a nice chunk of the race and ultimately finished second behind Lund. Lund pretty much only needed to avoid a total catastrophe to best title rival and reigning champion Neil Castles for a crown and did just that with style, closing out the series with his third-straight win and his fifth of the year to earn his final NASCAR championship. This championship performance was Lund's penultimate race in a major NASCAR touring series; he'd mostly stick to lower level short track races after this until the 1975 Talladega 500 Cup race where he would lose his life in an early crash. Tommy Houston was a local racer at Hickory in this era. Great to see him come up to go a few rounds with the some of the bigger names and turn in a solid run on his home track. Gotta love Tiny Lund promoting his own "restaurant" on his car. The car was also decaled up as to where there was a single 5 on each of the front headlights. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
