There were 46 cars entered for 44 spots. Two cars went home. There were three heat races plus a non-qualifiers race. The first heat race consisted of only the top 10 drivers through pole qualifying. The drivers were inverted from time trials for a 20-lap race. These drivers would start 1-10 in the 250. Finish: 1. Bobby Dragon, 2. Stanton Barrett, 3. Chuck Bown, 4. Mike Weeden, 5. Kelly Moore, 6. Dick McCabe, 7. Billy Clark, 8. Mike Barry, 9. Ricky Craven, 10. Stub Fadden. The second and third heat races were different from the first in that the winners of each race started 11th and 12th, respectfully. Second-place finishers were 13th and 14th and so on through positions 11-36. The second 20-lap heat race had the top 13 finishers transfer to the 250. There were three cautions. First caution: Tony Hirschman and Babe Branscombe spun on the backstretch. Second caution: Branscombe spun again. Third caution: Jeff Spraker and Mike Olsen get together in turn three, Morgan Shepherd piled into Spraker??s nose. Finish: 1. Bruce Haley, 2. Curtis Markham, 3. Mike Rowe, 4. Greg Sacks, 5. Tony Hirschman, 6. Jimmy Spencer, 7. Mike McLaughlin, 8. Tommy Houston, 9. Babe Branscombe, 10. Ray Lee, 11. Barney McRae, 12. Mike Olsen, 13. Scott Bachand The third 20-lap heat race had the top 13 finishers transfer to the 250. There were four cautions. First caution: Lloyd Gillie spun in turn four. Second caution: Rain Third caution: Rain (red flag). Pete Silva was black flagged for some reason. Fourth caution: Martin Truex spun in turn two. Joe Bessey was the class of the field with Dale Shaw not far behind. Two cars trying to stay on the lead lap caused Bessey to slow down. Shaw took advantage with two laps to go, grabbed the lead and went on to win by just over half a car length over Bessey. Finish: 1. Dale Shaw, 2. Joe Bessey, 3. Jamie Aube, 4. Ricky Harrison, 5. Dave Dion, 6. Kenny Wallace, 7. Terry Labonte, 8. Pete Silva, 9. Glenn Sullivan, 10. Dean Ferri, 11. Lloyd Gillie, 12. Martin Truex, 13. Mike Hovis The ??Last Chance Race? had only six cars. Only the winner was guaranteed a spot in the 250. There was one caution: First caution: Ernie Irvan blows up in the turn three. Finish: 1. Bobby Gada, 2. Ron Lamell, 3. Chad Little, 4. Jeff Barry, 5. Darren Bernier DNQ: Richard Messier No. 44 Pontiac *Ernie Irvan No. 38 Buick Irvan would take over Darren Bernier??s No. 26 Pontiac for the 250. The only two prior visits to victory lane in Busch North races by the Blue Oval Boys were a pair of victories by Mark Martin in companion races, he was running for Busch series points and not Busch North. 7. The doors had some pretty nice makeshift 8's, but the roof number wasn't changed and remained 33. 8. Therefore there were 250 green flag laps and 126 caution laps for a total of 376 laps. 9. Matt posted: 12.16.2017 - 11:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I remember this race as a young 18 year old. I was excited because we were having Terry Labonte driving the car I was working on (Dave Lind #10). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
