Race recap
The field was set by time trials and provisionals. No qualifying race.

Lap 1 - Ted Christopher gets the jump on Andy Santerre on the outside,
but Santerre leads the first lap on the inside. Behind them, the field
gets bunched up and Brad Boissonneault spins through the infield off
turn four. No yellow, but falls a lap down.

*First caution
Lap 10 - Brad Bennett and Dave Dion get hooked together off turn four
and crash into the wall. Denny Doyle slams into Bennett and Tom Bolles
spins through the infield. Bennettâ??s first race in the No. 6 Pontiac
was over. Doyle also took his car behind the wall. Dion would get
repaired and continue with heavy damage.

Lap 21 - Ted Christopher takes the lead from Santerre on the outside
lane coming out of turn four. Half a lap laterâ?¦

*Second caution
Lap 21 - Jason Manafort crashes with heavy damage. GeGe Gravel spins and
gets some damage.

On the restart, Tracy Gordon goes sliding through the grass up through
turn one and narrowly avoids getting into the wall. Lee Sherwood gets
stuck behind Gordon. Both continue under green.

Lap 41 - Bryan Wall spins while battling inside of Mike Olsen in turn
one. At the same time, Tom Fox falls off the pace. No yellow.

*Third caution
Lap 54 - Tom Carey Jr. slams into the wall and comes to a stop on the
inside of turn two bringing out the caution. He gestures to Herb Drugg,
saying in the interview, that Drugg didnâ??t give him any room and cut
down Careyâ??s tire.

Meanwhile, Santerre has been on the back bumper of Christopher for
nearly the entire time TC had the lead.

Lap 80 - Kelly Moore goes spinning through the infield on the
backstretch, but gets back underway with no yellow.

Lap 83 - Santerre battles on the inside of Christopher, washes up the
track, bumps Christopher and takes the lead coming out of turn four.
Santerre sets sail and drives off from TC and the field.

Lap 90 - Tom Bolles drives too deep into the first turn and gets into
Martin Truex, sending both cars spinning. No yellow, no damage for
either car.

*Fourth caution
Lap 108 - After racing side-by-side for several laps, Eric Bodine and
points leader Jerry Marquis make contact in turn one and both spin. Lee
Sherwood spins trying to avoid the cars, but slams into the side of
Marquisâ??s car. Bodine and Marquis drive off, but Marquis would retire
soon after.

Lap 125 - Moore loses it in turn one while Santerre puts another lap on
him. Christopher and Rick Fuller slow slightly, allowing Santerre to
pull away even more.

About Lap 130 - Bodine spins in turn three, no yellow.

Lap 134 - Rick Fuller, with fresher right side tires, passes Christopher
on the inside for second.

Lap 150 - Santerre cruises to over half a straightaway lead to pick up
his only win of 1997. He becomes the first repeat winner at Stafford.

Santerre and Christopher didnâ??t pit in the race while several drivers
took on right side tires during the third and fourth cautions.
