Sixth - #8 To the rear - 8 - engine change 9 crew chief - Paul Andrews 21 status - crash Rogelio Lopez wouldn't forget his first trip to Dover - actually, if he's lucky, he wouldn't remember hit. Lopez cut a right front tire coming out of turn 2 early in the race and crashed into the outside wall very hard at a very high rate of speed. It was not the only hard crash of the day. Clair Zimmerman hit the exhaust pipes that were dropped off of another car and folded in most of his entire left front before smacking the wall, and in the closing stages Jerry Marquis blew a right front at an even more critical angle than Lopez and had his entire car go up in a blaze while he scrambled to get out and get away from the flames. Marquis hit literally the exact same spot on the wall at the exit of turn 2 that Lopez had hit, saving the track crew a little bit of time in overnight painting I suppose. A red flag was needed to tow away the burnt racecar. On a day that was already on the overcast side, this pushed the race to end quite close to sunset at a track that does not have lights. 45 sponsor - American Red Cross/Goss Dodge Hoar had the Red Cross on the hood in an effort to drive donations for those in the Gulf impacted by a couple (then-)recent storms, Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. Duct-tape number alert: Brett Thompson ran an 81 that had been hastily switched from a 61, his usual West number. In an unusual occurrence for a car with duct-taped numbers, Thompson ran up front all day and came home with a top ten. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
