So he came in a lap later than everyone else and dropped to the back. He was able to come back through the field and pass Moffitt with 13 to go and win. Lots of penalties in the race. -Michelle Theriault was penalized four laps for taking four tires on a pit stop under yellow (not allowed in this series). -Eddie MacDonald (who may have had the second-best car) was black flagged for an improper restart. He went a lap down, passed the leader Moffitt to get back on the lead lap and fought all the way back to a top 10. -Sergio Pena was called back into the pits for dragging equipment outside the box. An airwrench got caught and he yanked it right out. -Matt DiBenedetto, who ran into the back of Corey LaJoie on a restart after LaJoie didn't go, had a lot of smoke coming out of his car for many laps (presumably from a tire rub), was black flagged with just a few laps to go, killing his chance to chase Gresham for the title. There were other penalties, but those were the big ones. Rough day for Revolution Racing. Michael Cherry went up in a cloud of smoke. They had to red flag the race for 14 minutes to clean up the fluid. Darrell Wallace Jr. came to a stop on the access road. He later returned to the race. Then Pena's penalty. Great run for Gresham. He may run away with the title with the troubles to DiBenedetto and Wallace in this one. He's had top fives in every race but the first one at Greenville. Career-best finishes for Brandon Gdovic, Benny Gordon, Daniel Suarez. 3. RCRandPenskeGuy posted: 07.16.2011 - 3:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Nice runs for Sergio Pena and Chase Elliott. I hope Gresham and Moffit can make a career for themselves in one of NASCAR's top three series, but it's hard to tell how good they really are because they're driving Cup equipment in a developmental series for youngsters. 4. I'd say he's got good potential. Max Gresham picks up his 2nd consecutive East Series win and the 4th of his career. After only having 3 top 10's all of last season Gresham has 7 top 5's (all in a row) out of the first 8 races of 2011. All of Brett Moffitt's 5 top 10's this season are top 2 finishes (2 wins, 3 runner-ups). Corey Lajoie gets his 4th straight top 10 and 3rd podium finish of the season. "Wow, no Fords in the field at one of the series bigger races" The #07's been switching back and forth between Dodge and Ford this season, 5 races with a Ford and 3 with a Dodge. Brandon Gdovic picked up his best career finish in 4th, his 1st career top 5 in 8 starts (all this season). Benny Gordon (long time USAR Hooter Pro Cup driver) got his 1st career top 5, and 2nd top 10 of the season in 7 starts. Alex Bowman finishes 6th for a 2nd straight race, but hasn't had a top 5 in the last 5 races. Daniel Suarez gets his 1st top 10 in 5 starts this season. After finishing 20th or worse in 3 straight races Sergio Pena has back-to-back top 10's (a win and an 8th). And after leading only 1 race for 10 laps in his first 16 East Series starts (but that was in his win at South Boston), Pena has led 122 laps in the last 2 races. Eddie MacDonald gets just his 3rd top 10 of the season but his 10th in 22 starts at Loudon (3 wins). Chase Elliott has back-to-back top 10's for the first time this season. 5. It would prove to be his last in the East series but he'd go on to win the series title in 2011 before moving up to the Truck series in 2012. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
