By the look of the results sheet, I think I can figure out why he didn't qualify originally. Winnings: Evans - $3,165 Schultz - $1,820 L. Fox - $1,285 The race ended in exciting fashion with the top three finishers nose to tail when the checkers flew. The only problem with this, though, was that third place Leon Fox was the one that led the trio across the stripe, much to the chagrin of winner Garrett Evans. Fox discovered he had lost most of his brakes during the final 65-lap run to the finish and mostly wound up coasting through the high-banked corners, somehow preserving his spot on the pylon. Evans caught Fox in the closing laps and kept getting chopped off whenever he made a move to pass Fox, allowing second-place Rick Schultz to close right up and make a race of it. In turn, Evans' erratic driving in response to Fox's unusual line also wound up preventing Schultz from being able to pull off any solid pass attempt on Evans. It was mostly a matter of pride for Evans, who had already clinched the 1985 championship after the penultimate race at the track now known as South Sound. He led every lap at the line, but had briefly lost the lead as they ran on the track to Schultz when they lapped past both Bill Schmitt and Bob Fox at times. Schultz said he developed steering problems when he kept hitting the wall running the outside line past the lappers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
