Martin had to earn this win with a last lap pass on Ken Pedersen. The only lap Martin ever lead in the series was the money lap here. This was the Northwest Tour's first-ever Portland International Raceway. This event was an undercard race for a CART race the next day and televised live by ESPN. Really cool that the fans got to see top NASCAR and IndyCar talent racing at the same track on the same weekend. In addition to Martin Ford also sent NASCAR Cup racer Dale Jarrett to run this one. Jarrett's only Northwest Tour start saw the future Cup champion sidelined by a transmission failure just before halfway. Winston West racer Hershel McGriff makes his only Northwest Tour start of the season. The Oregon native finished just outside the top-10. 2. Maybe video from this race will turn up someday to find out if that was the case. Impressive for Mark to get the win here when Portland wasn't exactly his normal stopping grounds. 3. The closing laps saw Ken Pedersen, also in his Northwest Tour debut as he mainly raced in the Southwest, outfront in his #25 Chevrolet Lumina with Mark Martin hot in pursuit in the #6 Ford Thunderbird and throwing everything he had at him. With two to go Martin caught the grass a little but his car was faster than Pedersen's and he quickly caught up. All the pressure Martin put on Pedersen saw Ken try to block as the last lap began only to take the wrong line into the first chicane and leave the door open for Mark to make the winning pass. Martin pulled away for the win afterward but Pedersen still easily got a well earned second behind only the visiting Winston Cup star. 5. Dale Jarrett was the victim of a mechanical failure and noted in his post-exit interview that a very high amount of drivers had broken gears, rear ends and transmissions over the course of the race weekend. Mark Martin was hampered by a 37-second green flag pit stop, losing quite a few positions on-track in the process. Speaking of pit stops, at one point under a caution one of the announcers commented that the amount of fuel some of the crews were spilling when filling up the cars was awfully excessive, and possibly even dangerous. Sure enough, later on in the caution flag, cameras cut to one gasman on pit road stripped down to his underwear getting hosed off, presumably after spilling a large amount of gas while refueling. I can't seem to find any info about the Ted Olson in this race, but he was mentioned quite often during the broadcast. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
