For 7 cars to retire, 6 of them before half distance, in a 50 mile race,
shows that cars are a lot less reliable then they are today. Unless they
were today's equivalent of start and park drivers.

Well, drivers back then had a lot less money, and were probably trying
to save their equipment. And this was only a regional touring series,
which could explain it.
