It was highest payout of the Cup Season and certainly for us West guys. Everybody was at OMS, let me tell you. Qualed 20 the first day, then 20 the second, then the final 11 on Day 3. I was there in my wee early days crewing. I was with Clint Hutchins and we were not even close to making the show. If I recall, Clint ran about a dozen or so laps and could see we were off pace so we parked it for good. Garage space? What was that? We "garaged" on a portion of the infield road course. But let me tell you, OMS was magical. That was the most modern track we'd seen. Exceptional. A racing palace. There was a lot of excitement about OMS around that time. we were really disappointed to have missed the show. Later that year we made a show up at Marysville and that is where I met my wife of 33 years the day before the race. So that ended '72 on a good note for me and Clint. By '73 I was crewing full time. '72 I was just here and there, but was not going to miss OMS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
