A crewman, George Jefferson, brother of Harry Jefferson, the racing logger from Naches, suffered two broken legs in the same mishap on lap 74. Pattison is survived by six children. The horrified spectators watched as Ron Eaton skidded toward the infield, striking George Jefferson. Jefferson had rushed forward to give his brother, Harry, the palmsdown (slow down) signal when he saw the oil spill on the track from Wahl's car. In the next split of second, Ron Gautsche, also out of control hit Pattison, flinging his body 90 feet. Allen Bruce, another NASCAR official, said "The track was all marbles. They got to that point and it was all oil." The oil spill ran the length of the main straightaway, where the stockers hit their top speeds of 140 miles an hour. "I don't know what happened," Eaton said. "When they threw the yellow flag I moved down on the track. I was between two cars when I got hit and went for a ride." A tearful Gautsche said, "There was nothing I could do." Four cars wound up in the infield and two went off turn one. The race resumed after a half hour delay and the restart was controversial. The NASCAR lap counting began again under the yellow flag, instead of waiting for the green flag to be waived. (Extract from an article of Walt Parietti) Note: Harry Jefferson broke his transmission in qualifying, repaired it and started in the rear of the field. 4. nascar_vd / racing-reference.info posted: 04.10.2018 - 10:40 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Note: race name, attendance, some correction for "money" are now available.
