Bill Schmitt puts his name in the record books as the winner of the
final NASCAR Winston West race at Oregon's Umatilla Speedway. The track
had hosted an annual stop for the west coast stars each year since 1971.
This was Schmitt's second win of the season, the fourth of his career,
and his only one at Umatilla.

Chuck Bown had to settle for second. He took the lead from polesitter
J.J. Zaffino at the start and held off his early attacks but once
Schmitt got out front he never surrendered the top spot.

Ernie Stierly was looking to win here for the third year in a row but
when out early with an engine failure after starting up front. If the
results are anything to go by it looks like he laid down some oil and a
multiyear crash ensued to take out Pappy Pryor and Dan Joiner.
