Cale Yarborough wins his only non-companion race post-1971 Winston West
start, prevailing over fellow Cup racer Neil Bonnett to do so.

Also the series' first race at Phoenix International Raceway, a track
which remains on the schedule to this day

Chris Monoleos flipped in this race.

Not only did Monoleos flip, he went through the fence and came to rest
on top of the wall! Luckily, Monoleos suffered minor injuries, and the
only crowd injuries were 2 children suffering bruises from flying
debris, but it was a scary incident indeed!
