Practiced, and if I recall, maybe all of 20 laps. Qualed. Waited the hour or so before the race. Ran two laps and went out with a "clutch" issue. The only clutch going on was the appearance money clutched in his hand. He was strictly there to fill seats. Now the fact the fans thought he was going to race the whole thing and maybe even win it, well no chance. Bill Elliott came out one time to run Evergreen with us and was there for the stay and to win. Donnie ran with us one time. Geoff Bodine. But Dale Sr. was there to get the money and scram. I think he made it clear he was not to run distance. When he was there he talked to next to nobody and barely waved at the fans. For all his highness, the few times I was around him, and this was one....he was an garden-variety a-hole and quite unlikeable person. I have no idea what he was paid that day, but we heard it was in the low thousands. Pretty good money then. For most working class folks, to put it another way, it was two/three months work for what he got in over about six hours. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
