He flipped in practice, not during the race itself. 5. RaceFanX posted: 10.11.2017 - 5:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "The King" Richard Petty makes a rare standalone Winston West start, in fact the last of his career, just four days after he collected his 200th and final Winston Cup win. Petty's entry for this race was unique one as his #43 Pontiac was painted in a white variation of his usual STP colors instead of Petty Blue. The King may have won at Daytona but he lasted less than 15 laps here before a blown motor sent his white Grand Prix to the garage. 6. RaceFanX posted: 10.11.2017 - 5:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Owners: #7 Kyle Petty- George Jefferson #43 Richard Petty- Gary Smith (he was a teammate to Hershel McGriff) West Coast NASCAR promoter Ken Clapp worked out the deals to have both of the Pettys entered in this race, getting Richard set up with McGriff's Pontiac effort and partnering Kyle with George Jefferson's outfit since it was the only Ford team in Winston West at the time and Kyle was under contract to Ford to race exclusively in their cars at the time. As part of the deal Kyle's Cup sponsor 7-Eleven also came aboard to do a sponsorship on the Jefferson team's normal entry, the #95 of Winston West rookie Derrike Cope. The Jefferson team only had one road course car which they gave to Kyle while Cope got one of their oval cars; as shown here Kyle also blew a motor and went out early but Cope turned in a great run. Derrike's top-5 landed him a sponsorship from 7-Eleven from the rest of the season and somewhat put him on the radar of the NASCAR guys out East. 7.
