With the cup drivers on a bye week, Bill Elliott made a rare appearance
in the Winston West Series, driving the #9 Ford for Melling Racing.
Elliott qualified 9th, led 0 laps, and retired early on after blowing an
engine.

This was billed as the first major 500-lap west coast stock car race
since 1953, when a 500-lapper at the old infamous Oakland Stadium was
won by a young Hershel McGriff, who came within two carlengths of
defending that title three decades later on here.
