As was always the case with companion races from 1977 onward the West
series drivers were non-factors against the Cup boys.

Right at the end of this race a crash saw Terry Labonte crash "through"
a concrete wall at the same time three cars, including J.D. McDuffie,
lost it at Turn 9. Tim Richmond dominated the race but slowed to avoid
the crash allowing Darrell Waltrip to make the pass and go on to win.

Glen Steurer's 10th here would count at both his third and final Winston
West victory and his lone top-10 in a Cup race.

TNN broadcast this race. Brock Yates and Steve Evans were in the booth.

This was a companion race with the Winston Cup Series. It was also just
the second race of the year, as NASCAR had shortened the Winston West
schedule from 12 events in 1985 to just 8 for 1986.
