Gordy Oberg was listed as 24th but apprently was scratched before the race, so here's the starting line-up 4. The 1986 schedule was short and heavy on road courses with this and the following race at the Calgary's Race City Speedway as the only short track stops. 5. Incredibly, Elliott was able to bring the #9 Ford home in second on the lead lap despite the damage. Awesome Bill from Dawsonville would have to wait until 1987 to win this Winston Washington 500, which he had also attempted in 1985. 6. rm posted: 11.04.2020 - 9:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Mike Chase was hospitalized after this race due to fume exposure. This was a side effect of racing that wasn't taken very seriously at the time, and it was something that stayed mostly out of focus in NASCAR until Rick Mast retired at the turn of the century due to longterm carbon monoxide exposure. Speaking about the incident afterwards, Chase said that he had heard about drivers getting out of the car after long races and feeling "loopy" or not being able to recall certain monotonous sections of the race, but he never considered that it could actually happen to him. Chase hit the wall early on, picking up nonterminal damage, but was able to continue on at a competitive pace and even assumed the lead for a bit under a midrace caution. Chase said that during the long green flag runs near the end of the race, he would suddenly come to when he'd scrape the outside wall or run down on the grass on the inside of the track. Chase finally got his bearings together enough to realize that he was in trouble and came down pit road to get out of the car. Even after an overnight stay Chase was mostly flippant about the ordeal. He got right back in his car the next two weeks and won Southwest tour races at Placer County (now All American) and Tahoe-Carson - 100-lap events, which he felt was much more manageable than a 500-lapper. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
