Chad finished far in front of his old man as he turned in a strong runner-up run. This was Chuck Little's first West start in just under 11 years and in all likelihood he was just starting and parking Chad's backup car. 6. rm posted: 11.05.2020 - 8:16 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Race name - Canadian Players 500 Similarly, race winner Bill Schmitt raced against his son Kenny for the first time in West competition here, with Kenny pulling field-filling duty as well. Drivers commented that the track was very fast and smooth, leading to drivers hitting 130 mph on the straightaways - an impressive feat for a track under a half-mile in length. The attrition was predicted to be very high, but even this exceeded the expectations of the most pessimistic drivers and mechanics. Schmitt, meanwhile, ran near the front all day and took it easy while his competitors took themselves out over the course of the three-hour affair - taking much less time than had been anticipated thanks to the lack of cars running by the end. Third caution - 04, 27 accident turn 2 Fifth caution - 12 accident frontstretch Ninth caution - 26, 98 accident frontstretch One of the stories leading into the race was the effectiveness of the two main West tire options, McCreary and Goodyear. Much of the field opted for the McCreary tires, said to be more reliable here, while polesitter-turned-race-winner Schmitt stuck to his guns with quicker Goodyears. Hershel McGriff was pulling away from Schmitt as the leader when he cut a tire and hit the wall, collecting lapper Bobby Schukar in the process. Terry Petris had a spectacular tire blowout and crashed hard coming out of turn four later on. Both McGriff and Petris, interestingly, were using McCreary tires. John Kieper - relief-driving for Garrett Evans - brought out the final caution of the day when he had a tire (of unnamed brand) go flat and bounced off the frontstretch wall. Sending sparks up as he careened back down the track, Kieper just barely caught second-place Chad Little and sent Little crashing as well. Little was still on the lead lap at the time and had been gaining significant ground on leader Schmitt until that incident. Little pulled in for serious repairs but was still able to hold onto second - and the championship lead - over top Canadian finisher Billy Hitchcox. 3 owner - Bill Schmitt 6 owner - George Jefferson ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
