Never knew the Winston West Series ran on a street course. 2. Chives5150 posted: 10.19.2018 - 1:49 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) And it was a long race, too! 3. They ran a few longer races and several unique locations. 5. The inaugural event saw Canadian Roy Smith win his first West race in almost five years in dramatic fashion. Hershel McGriff won the pole for this one and lead the first lap only for his title rival Chad Little, a proud Spokane native, to take the lead on the second lap and lead the next 21 laps before the lead shuffled around a bit and a rainstorm brought the action to a halt for a two and half hour red flag while the track was dried. Roy Smith's car had ignition problems and even a brief electrical fire after the rain storm but once he got going he was a factor. He passed McGriff for the lead but found himself up against Little in a Thunderbird vs. Thunderbird street race with victory on the line. Smith held off hometown hero Little's charge before pulling away to take the win. Ruben Garcia and Jim Robinson led some laps in this one but ultimately wrecked together when Robinson got into Garcia and sent him for a loop with Roman Calczynski then running into Robinson. Smith came up on the crash scene but just managed to avoid being collected. Everyone got back going again but Calczynski and later Robinson both eventually fell out with mechanical woes. Chad Little's father Chuck Little made his final West start on the streets of his native Spokane but it ended with his Thunderbird wrecked on the opening lap in an incident that doesn't appear to have brought out a yellow. It was kind of a rough day for the Coors cars overall as Chuck Little and Tobey Butler's beer backed entries go out early while Chad Little comes oh so close to the win but has to settle for second. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
